About Kawabegawa Dam Plan
The photograph on the top page shows the valley which will be the
waterfront. In between the mountains on the left side, there will be
made a huge wall to stop the water. The roads runs along the valley is
the landmark of how high the water comes up.
"Kawabegawa" is not very much known as a rever. It is the river which
flows in to Kumagawa, which is famous for its Kuma-Shochu. Because of the
political action made by the local people, the Ministry of the
Construction has not been able to persue the plan which is made more than
30 years ago. They aims to finish construction in 2008. The construction
model is concrete-made arche. The height of the dam is 107.5 meters (one
third of the Tokyo Tower). The purpose of the project is;
to prevent flooding
to persue the flow-control
to supply agricultural water
to generate electricity
According to the research from press, none of these purpose is said
reasonable and valuable anymore.
The area which will be flooded by the dam is 13 km long. By the end of
2001, the most of the inhabitants in Toji area in Itsuki Village were
moved to the another area prepared by the government.
